Graduate Certificate in StatisticsProgramme Director: Dr Andris AbakuksThe Certificate course is intended mainly, but not exclusively, as a qualifying course for the MSc Applied Statistics and related courses for students who already have a bachelor's degree in a different discipline. The course will usually be taken over one year part-time, but may be taken over two years. For students wishing to take a more extensive programme of statistics modules at BSc level, there is also a Graduate Diploma in Statistics. Entrance requirementsThe normal admission requirement is A-level Mathematics or equivalent, for example, the Open University modules Using Mathematics and Exploring Mathematics or the Birkbeck College Certificate of Higher Education in Mathematical Studies. Otherwise well-qualified students whose mathematical background is not up to A-level standard are likely to find the Certificate course very demanding. Course contentThe course consists of two year-long BSc level modules, designed to give students a thorough grounding in the mathematical and statistical methods required for more advanced study of statistics: Lectures and examinationsLectures and other teaching activities take place in the evenings, from 6 to 9pm, mainly during the autumn and spring terms, with revision classes in the summer term. However, examinations usually take place in late May and in June during normal daytime working hours. To qualify for the MSc, students will be expected to pass the course with at least a merit classification, which means passing both modules, with an average mark of at least 60%. General enquiries and questions concerning admissions should be directed to the Programme Administrator:Jo Kwok |
