BSc(Econ) Financial Economics

Student Testimonials

Programme Director: Dr Anthony Garratt

This degree was launched in 1989 with considerable support from private sector sponsors. The part-time degree seeks to provide students with a broad economics background and an extensive knowledge of the financial sector and its concerns. Quantitative skills are stressed throughout and students receive extensive exposure to the use of computers and data analysis. A practical project is an integrated part of the degree. The programme is intended for individuals who, for whatever reason, missed the opportunity to study full-time for a degree in earlier life and now recognize the competitive edge that comes with a state-of-the-art degree in finance.

Entry Requirements

  • Over 21: flexible entry requirements (some combination of relevant work experience and education to a UK A Level standard).
  • Under 21: normal university entry requirements.
  • Credit for relevant earlier studies.

Students without an adequate background in economics or quantitative methods may be required to take, and pass with a credit, two foundation modules from Birkbeck's Certificate of Higher Education in Economics.
