Higher education teaching cannot - and should not - be separated from university research. The research of our academics, many whom are recognised as world-class experts in their fields, feeds directly into our teaching programmes. As a student you can be certain that your tutors are actively working to extend the boundaries of knowledge.
The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise rated 20% of the School’s work 4* (world-leading); 50% 3* (internationally excellent); 25% 2* (internationally recognised); and 5% 1* (nationally recognised). Over 90% of the Department staff was submitted: 25.1 full-time equivalents. All, including mathematicians and statisticians, were submitted to the economics and econometrics panel.
All Economics and Finance Working Papers are published online, as are journal papers by Faculty. or at RePEc. The Department runs a weekly Economics seminar series and a Mathematics seminar series.
The Department hosts the CfC, the Commodities Finance Centre, a forum for academics and practitioners working in the field of commodities modelling
We are also a member School of Birkbeck's Institute of Environment.
